El Vizcaíno Biosphere Reserve

El Vizcaíno spans 24,930 square kilometers between the Pacific Ocean and Gulf of California, featuring desert landscapes, wetlands, and coastal environments.

The Cochimi people inhabited this region for over 11,000 years, leaving cave art in the Sierra San Francisco mountains before Spanish exploration began.

The reserve preserves ancient rock art sites that document the traditions and daily activities of early inhabitants through detailed paintings and engravings.

The National Commission of Natural Protected Areas maintains visitor access from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM daily throughout the extensive protected territory.

Each winter, thousands of gray whales migrate from Arctic waters to the lagoons of San Ignacio and Ojo de Liebre for breeding and calving.
