Northridge, Residential neighborhood in San Fernando Valley, Los Angeles, United States
Northridge is a residential neighborhood in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles, California. The area spreads around a large university campus, crossed by wide streets with shopping centers, green spaces, and residential zones of single-family homes and low apartment complexes.
The area was originally called Zelzah after a ranch and changed its name following the opening of a large shopping center. A major earthquake in 1994 destroyed many buildings and led to extensive rebuilding of local infrastructure.
The state university shapes daily life with students walking between classes and gathering at campus coffee shops. Many residents work in education or attend public lectures and performances at the academic halls.
Most travelers reach the neighborhood by freeway or regional bus lines, as it sits west of downtown. Parks and shops are scattered throughout, and walking across all areas requires several hours or use of a vehicle.
One main street still carries the old name Zelzah Avenue and recalls the former designation of the area. The local library preserves photographs and documents from before the earthquake that show the transformation of the neighborhood.
