La Libertad Department, Administrative department in western El Salvador
The department extends from the Pacific Ocean to mountainous regions, encompassing Santa Tecla as its capital and numerous municipalities across 1,652 square kilometers.
La Libertad Department was established on February 3, 1865, following a governmental reorganization that aimed to improve the administrative structure of El Salvador.
The regional identity manifests through traditional festivals, agricultural practices, and local gastronomy, particularly in the preparation of seafood dishes at Port La Libertad.
Visitors can access the department through major highways connecting to San Salvador, with accommodations ranging from beachfront properties to mountain lodges throughout the region.
The department contains the Joya De Cerén archaeological site, where volcanic ash preserved an entire Mayan settlement from 600 AD until its discovery in 1976.
