Flores Island, Artificial island in Lake Petén Itzá, Guatemala
The small island of Flores connects to the mainland via a causeway and features streets lined with pink and pastel-colored buildings around a central plaza.
Following nearly two centuries of resistance, Spanish forces captured the last Maya stronghold of Nojpetén in 1697, establishing the current city of Flores.
The central plaza preserves ancient Maya stelae and contains a white cathedral constructed on the foundation of a former Maya temple.
Flores functions as the primary transportation center for exploring Maya archaeological sites, including Tikal, Yaxha, and El Mirador in northern Guatemala.
The settlement on this lake island dates back to 900 BC, making it one of the oldest continuously inhabited locations in the Americas.
