University of Cauca, university
The University of Cauca is a public higher education institution in Popayán with a mixed campus of historic stone buildings and modern structures. The institution houses faculties in law, medicine, engineering, arts, and social sciences with more than 1,300 faculty members and approximately 16,000 students.
The institution was founded in 1827 and followed a colonial education tradition from the Seminary of Popayán, where independence fighters like Francisco José de Caldas were educated. Over two centuries, it developed into a recognized national institution formally established as a national university in 1964.
The university is a place where students and teachers maintain local traditions and organize cultural celebrations throughout the year. Music, dance, and food events from the region take place regularly, connecting academic life with community practices.
The institution is centrally located in Popayán and is easily accessible by public transport or on foot from various parts of the city. Buildings are open during regular hours, and many areas provide seating and study spaces for visitors.
The institution holds extensive archives with documents from the colonial period and early republic, including papers from independence fighters. These historical collections offer insights into Colombia's path to independence and remain invaluable to researchers today.
