Tibaná, Municipality in Márquez Province, Boyacá, Colombia.
Tibaná is a municipality in Márquez Province, located at about 2,115 meters elevation in the Boyacá region. The area is shaped by mountains and farmland that characterize this Andean zone.
Spanish conqueror Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada founded the settlement on October 12, 1537, establishing colonial control in the region. Before this arrival, the Tibanaes people, a Muisca group, had inhabited the area with their own social structures.
The central plaza serves as a meeting point where people gather during festivals and religious celebrations throughout the year. This space reflects the everyday social rhythms of the community.
Administrative services and offices operate during regular business hours to assist residents with documentation and local matters. Coming from lower elevations, allow time to adjust to the high altitude before undertaking strenuous activities.
The name comes from the Tibanaes language, where 'Tiba' means chief or leader. This naming preserves the memory of the indigenous authority that once governed this highland region.
