Claustro de San Agustín

Claustro de San Agustín is a Baroque cloister in Tunja with four galleries arranged around a central courtyard. Tuscan stone columns and semicircular arches structure both levels, creating a harmonious spatial arrangement typical of colonial religious architecture.

The site hosted Tunja's founding mass in 1539 during the era of the New Kingdom of Granada. Augustinian friars later built the cloister on this significant location to establish their religious community.

The interior walls display preserved paintings depicting scenes from the life of Saint Augustine, offering a window into colonial religious imagery. These works allow visitors to experience the devotional art that once surrounded the monks and worshippers within these spaces.

The building now houses the Cultural Center of Banco de la República, offering a library, exhibition spaces, and an auditorium. Plan time to explore the different areas, as regular exhibitions and cultural activities are held throughout the year.

The building passed through multiple distinct functions over the centuries, serving as an Augustinian convent, a university, a charity hospital, and a prison before its transformation in 1966.
