Simijaca, Municipality in Cundinamarca Department, Colombia.
Simijaca is a municipality in Cundinamarca Department located on a high mountain plateau in the Colombian Andes. The settlement spreads across a modest area with agricultural lands and housing organized within a rural landscape.
The settlement was founded on August 14, 1600 by Luis Enríquez and Juan López de Linares after an earlier attempt had failed in 1586. This establishment marked the beginning of stable Spanish colonial presence in this mountain region.
The place was once part of the Muisca Confederation and still carries traces of this indigenous past in its traditions and place names. Local communities preserve this connection through daily practices and customs that remain visible today.
The highland climate is mild but can turn cold; weather-appropriate clothing is recommended. The best time to visit is during drier months when farm roads and paths are in better condition for walking around.
The place operates its own local television station through cable connection and runs a high school radio service broadcasting to residents. These two community media outlets serve as important channels for sharing local news and information with everyone in town.
