Laguna de Fúquene, Sacred lake in Cundinamarca Department, Colombia.
Laguna de Fúquene is a large lake in the Ubaté-Chiquinquirá Valley at approximately 2540 meters elevation, spreading across several thousand hectares. The surrounding landscape shows a mix of open water, wetland shores, and agricultural land in the nearby communities.
The lake was originally much larger and deeper before Europeans arrived in the 16th century. Since then, drainage, land use changes, and environmental shifts have gradually reduced its size.
The lake's name comes from the Muisca language and refers to the misty, swampy landscape that visitors can still see today. Local communities have long tied their traditions and way of life to these waters, which have shaped their work and connection to nature for generations.
The area has several access points from the surrounding towns, with Ubaté, Chiquinquirá, and Simijaca being the main gateways. Visitors should bring weather-appropriate clothing, as mist and humidity are common at this elevation.
The water surface and bird populations have shrunk dramatically in recent decades, reflecting the ecological changes of the place. A visitor can observe these shifts in the altered shorelines and the less diverse wildlife seen today.
