Paramo de Belmira

Páramo de Belmira is a high-altitude ecosystem in the mountains of Antioquia that features sparse alpine vegetation, rocky terrain, and numerous water sources. The landscape is shaped by lakes, springs, and streams that flow through the rolling upland slopes.

An ancient mountain path called Reventón-Sabanas connected distant settlements through this high-altitude pass and has been used for over seven centuries. This route shaped how people moved through and understood the region.

The people of Belmira have built their farming around the reliable water sources found here, particularly focusing on dairy production that depends on this landscape. The springs and streams are woven into local life and remain essential to how communities in the region function.

Bring warm layered clothing and plenty of water since conditions become colder and harsher with elevation gain. A local guide is highly recommended to navigate safely through the changing altitude zones and shifting weather.

Frailejones are specialized mountain plants that grow remarkably slowly here, adding just one to two centimeters each year. These sturdy plants dominate the landscape and represent a remarkable adaptation to the harsh high-altitude climate.
