The park opened in 1989 as Disney-MGM Studios, originally combining entertainment with working film production facilities. By the 2000s the production operations were shut down, and the site was fully converted into a visitor-focused attraction.

Families wander through recreated film environments like Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge and Toy Story Land, stepping into scenes from well-known movies. Guests spend their day riding attractions, watching live performances, and meeting characters from the films they grew up with.

The Hollywood Tower Hotel rises to around 199 feet and houses a ride system where elevator cars move not only up and down but also sideways through hidden backstage areas.
