Disney's Contemporary Resort, Modern hotel in Lake Buena Vista, United States
Disney's Contemporary Resort is a resort and convention center in Bay Lake, Florida. The property consists of a 14-story A-frame tower through which a monorail line passes at the center level.
The hotel opened on October 1, 1971, alongside Magic Kingdom as the first resort at Walt Disney World. The construction followed early 1970s modular building methods that used prefabricated sections assembled on site.
The name comes from the contemporary design style of the 1970s, which was considered forward-looking at the time. The 90-foot mosaic by artist Mary Blair in the main lobby uses geometric shapes and colors inspired by the Grand Canyon and catches the eye of everyone passing through.
Access is available either by monorail or by roadway connections that link the property to other areas. The main lobby is located on the fourth floor and helps orient guests arriving there toward rooms or event spaces.
The monorail station sits inside the building and connects guests directly to Magic Kingdom and other park destinations. This feature allows travelers to move without passing through parking lots or bus stops.
