Neptune Pool, outdoor swimming pool ensemble at Hearst Castle, in San Simeon, California
Neptune Pool is a large outdoor swimming basin at Hearst Castle featuring marble surfaces, fountains, sculptures, and columns designed in the manner of Greek and Roman architecture. A pavilion with a temple-like facade anchors the far end, surrounded by statues of sea gods and mythological figures that enhance the classical setting.
Construction began in the 1920s under architect Julia Morgan, with the pool expanded multiple times before reaching its final form in 1936. The design draws from ancient Roman and Greek styles that appealed to wealthy Americans during that era.
The pool reflects the passion of wealthy early 20th-century Americans for ancient styles and serves as a gathering place where craftsmanship and history blend visibly. The mythological figures positioned around the water connect visitors to stories from classical antiquity and give the space a timeless character.
Access to the pool is available through Hearst Castle tours, allowing visitors to observe the sculptures and architectural details up close. The area is quieter and more enjoyable during early morning or late afternoon visits.
Parts of the classical temple that dominates the pool were imported from Europe and brought to California by William Randolph Hearst to achieve authenticity. The pool has also served as a filming location for Hollywood productions, including the film Spartacus and music videos.
