Table Mountain, Mountain summit in Tulare County, California.
Table Mountain is a summit rising to 13,627 feet within the Great Western Divide, lying between Sequoia and Kings Canyon national parks. It features a large flat plateau at its top, ringed by steep vertical escarpments.
The peak was originally called Mount Hazen when named in 1881, but took its current name in 1905. This change reflects how geographic names in the region evolved over time through surveying and local use.
The summit draws mountaineers and hikers who seek its challenging routes and distinctive character. Its flat top sets it apart from the pointed peaks surrounding it in the range.
Reaching the summit requires scrambling skills rated class 3 and can be approached from either the Southeast Side or West Ridge. The climb is demanding and calls for solid route-finding ability and experience on rocky ground.
The summit holds an unusually large flat plateau covering about 35 acres, remaining intact at high altitude. This broad open space atop such a high peak is uncommon in the region and makes the terrain feel surprisingly spacious.
