University Peak, Mountain summit in Inyo County, United States
University Peak is a mountain in the Sierra Nevada that rises between Mount Gould and Mount Bradley, positioned along the boundary of Kings Canyon National Park. The summit offers views across multiple ridges and valleys, with access routes that wind through alpine meadows and rocky terrain.
The peak was first climbed in 1896 when J. N. Le Conte and companions reached the summit. This early ascent reflected the broader exploration and documentation of the Sierra Nevada during that era.
The peak received its name in recognition of the University of California's contributions to Sierra Nevada exploration and research programs.
The climb starts at the Onion Valley Trailhead and follows the Kearsarge Pass Trail, crossing through alpine elevations and open terrain with minimal shade. Climbers should prepare for altitude and sudden weather changes typical of the eastern Sierra Nevada.
The mountain spans two California counties, with its western side in Tulare County and eastern side in Inyo County. This border location creates distinctly different geological and climate conditions on each side of the peak.
