W Las Vegas, Unfinished construction site on Las Vegas Strip, Nevada
W Las Vegas is an incomplete tower structure standing about 465 feet tall (141 meters) near The Venetian resort on the Strip. The building remains covered by a large protective tarp to shield its unfinished state from view.
Construction started in 2007 as a St. Regis condominium project but halted in November 2008 when the Great Recession struck the economy. Work has not resumed since that interruption.
The project was meant to reflect Las Vegas's move toward luxury residences with high-end services, featuring planned amenities such as butler service and private pools.
The building is visible from outside but not accessible to enter, visible only from a distance and nearby public areas along the Strip. Best viewing is from the surrounding streets where it stands out among the casinos and hotels.
The protective tarp was installed after guests spent years staring at the incomplete building, prompting managers to cover it up to avoid the distraction. This covering actually became more visible and puzzling to passersby than the unfinished structure itself.
