Ivanpah Solar Power Facility, Thermal solar power station in Mojave Desert, California
The Ivanpah facility contains 173,500 heliostats directing sunlight toward three 459-foot towers to generate steam for electricity production.
Opening in February 2014 after a $2.2 billion construction project, the Ivanpah Solar Power Facility represented the largest thermal solar installation of its time.
The facility demonstrates California's commitment to renewable energy development through partnerships between technology companies, utilities, and government agencies.
The power station generates electricity for 140,000 households while using an air-cooling system that reduces water consumption by 95 percent.
Each morning, natural gas burners heat the system to operating temperature, producing 46,084 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually.
