Hey Reb!, Bronze mascot statue at University of Nevada, Las Vegas, United States
Hey Reb! was a bronze statue at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas depicting a western frontiersman with a prominent mustache, wide-brimmed hat, and university jersey. The sculpture stood before the Tam Alumni Center and served as a landmark on campus for many years.
The statue was installed in 2007 at the Tam Alumni Center as the university's mascot representation. It was removed in 2020 during nationwide protests and permanently retired in 2021.
The statue served as a gathering point where students took photos and touched its mustache, with many believing this gesture brought academic luck. It became a familiar symbol of student life on campus, part of daily routines and social activities.
The statue was located on campus and easily accessible on foot for university visitors. Its position provided good space for photography, making it a convenient gathering spot.
The university attempted to distance the figure from Confederate symbolism by depicting a settler rather than a soldier. Yet this artistic choice could not prevent growing concerns about its representation.
