Eagle Cap, Mountain summit in Wallowa Mountains, Oregon, US.
Eagle Cap is a granite peak in the Wallowa Mountains that rises to about 9,572 feet within Oregon's wilderness. The surrounding area features alpine lakes, steep rock formations, and multiple hiking routes crossing through the high country.
Early settlers named this peak believing it was the highest mountain in the area, though later surveys revealed it was not. The name persisted regardless and continues to identify this distinctive peak within the Wallowa range.
The Eagle Cap Wilderness encompasses 360,000 acres of protected land, offering visitors opportunities to observe native wildlife including mountain goats and bighorn sheep.
The summit can be reached via three main routes, each offering different difficulty levels and scenery along the way. Permits are required at the trailhead, and checking weather and snow conditions before heading out is advised for safety.
Several alpine lakes including Horseshoe, Lee, Douglas, and Mirror Lake sit within the surrounding basin and create reflected images of the peaks above them. These lakes form part of a popular hiking loop that many visitors enjoy exploring for their striking reflections in still water.
