Kamnik–Savinja Alps, Mountain range in northern Slovenia.
The Kamnik-Savinja Alps spread across northern Slovenia and consist mainly of sedimentary rock with multiple high peaks and deep valleys. Streams and rivers carve through the landscape, creating a rugged terrain dotted with meadows and forested slopes.
The range received its name in 1778 from naturalist Belsazar Hacquet, who named it after the nearby town of Kamnik. This geographical designation became established as scientific exploration of the Alps advanced during subsequent centuries.
Mountain villages in the Upper Savinja Valley, such as Jezersko and Luče, maintain traditional ways of making and selling local cured meats and cheeses that reflect centuries of alpine life.
The range has extensive hiking trails and mountain huts positioned throughout the network to provide shelter and food for visitors. Proper footwear and preparation for changing weather conditions are important for any visit to this terrain.
The easternmost glacier in the Southern Alps lies beneath Mount Skuta, a geographical feature that catches many visitors off guard. This small ice patch survives in a location far from where most people expect to find frozen water in southern Europe.
