Minzu University of China is a government-owned university in Beijing that brings together students from all 56 ethnic groups in the country. The campus features modern buildings with traditional design elements, gardens, and quiet study areas that form an academic environment for ethnic studies, languages, history, and social sciences.
The institution began in 1941 as an Institute for Nationalities in Yan'an and was established as a university in Beijing in 1951. In 2008 it received its current name and was included in major national education programs to strengthen its role in connecting different ethnic communities.
The university displays China's diversity daily through its campus life and spaces decorated with patterns from various ethnic groups. Students wear traditional clothes during special events and participate in performances that celebrate regional arts and customs.
The campus is located near the center of Beijing's Haidian District, close to the National Library and the Zhongguancun tech zone. The grounds are surrounded by trees and green spaces and are easy to navigate on foot or by bike, with a mix of modern shops and traditional markets in the surrounding area.
