Yenching University, Private university in Beijing, China.
Yenching University was an educational institution in northeastern Beijing that brought together four Christian colleges as a research center, built upon the grounds of a former Qing Dynasty royal garden. The campus combined academic structures with historical gardens and offered programs in theology, law, medicine, arts, and sciences.
The institution was founded in 1919 through collaboration between Methodist, Presbyterian, and Congregational churches seeking to establish Christian higher education in China. It closed in 1952 as China's educational system underwent major restructuring following the founding of the People's Republic.
The university blended Western teaching approaches with Chinese scholarly traditions, creating a space where both educational styles coexisted on the same grounds. Visitors can still observe today how the architectural mix of Western buildings and Chinese gardens reflects this cultural combination.
The grounds are fairly open and can be explored on foot, with the mix of buildings and green spaces making walking comfortable. It helps to allow time for exploring, since the historical gardens and structures are spread across a substantial area.
During the Second Sino-Japanese War, the entire university relocated its operations to Chengdu in Sichuan province to continue teaching. This was a remarkable act of resolve, as hundreds of students and faculty members followed this relocation.
