Houhai, Lake in northern Beijing, China
Houhai is the southern section of the three connected lakes that form Shichahai, bordered by traditional buildings and willow trees. The water runs beneath historic structures that have shaped the local landscape for centuries.
During the Yuan Dynasty from 1271 to 1368, Houhai served as the northern terminal of the Grand Canal, which connected Beijing to Hangzhou. This waterway was essential for commerce and supplying the growing city.
The area around the lake holds several temples, including Guangji Temple and Huitong Temple, which reflect Beijing's Buddhist and Taoist traditions. Local residents still visit these temples for prayer and spiritual practice today.
The area is reachable by subway line 6 to Beihai North station, followed by a short walk to the lake. Flat paths around the waterside make it easy to explore, with multiple entry points along the shore.
The lake surface freezes from December through February, turning into a natural ice rink where locals practice traditional ice skating techniques. This seasonal phenomenon has deep roots in the region's winter customs.
