Jinan University, Public university in Guangzhou, China
Jinan University is a higher education institution in Guangzhou spread across five sites, with twenty-seven faculties and fifty-nine departments. These offer degree programs in humanities, sciences, social studies, medicine, engineering, and business, teaching tens of thousands of students.
The institution began in 1906 in Nanjing as the first educational establishment in the country to accept students from abroad. After several moves during political upheaval, it settled permanently in the southern city of Guangzhou in 1958, where it grew into a leading nationwide university.
The campus along Huangpu Avenue West takes its name from an ancient teaching to share knowledge across all regions of the country. This philosophical foundation shapes the international character of the institution, which welcomes students from more than a hundred countries.
The main campus site on Huangpu Avenue West can be reached by public transport, and many areas are open to visitors who contact reception beforehand. Faculty buildings cluster around squares and gardens that can be explored on foot, and visitors should allow time to appreciate the size of the grounds.
The institution offers two enrollment periods each year, in spring and autumn, which gives students from different academic calendars flexibility. This arrangement makes entry easier for international students coming from regions with differing semester cycles.
