Dragon's Back, Mountain ridge hiking trail in Shek O Country Park, Hong Kong.
Dragon's Back is a hiking trail following a mountain ridge in Shek O Country Park with viewing points overlooking the South China Sea and nearby islands. The path winds across rolling terrain where open sections alternate with areas surrounded by grass and low vegetation.
During the twentieth century this high point served military purposes as a lookout for monitoring shipping and coastal activity around Hong Kong. The ridge later transformed into a popular route for recreation as the area became more accessible to the public.
Local people named this place after the dragon-like curve of the ridge when viewed from certain angles. The shape has become deeply connected to how visitors experience and remember the walk.
The trailhead is reachable by public transportation: take the MTR to Shau Kei Wan Station and transfer to bus number 9 heading toward To Tei Wan. The walk requires a moderate level of fitness and comfortable hiking shoes are important for the sometimes uneven ground.
At the end of the walk you reach Big Wave Bay, a beach known for consistent swells and surfing that local athletes use regularly. Many hikers take advantage of this to cool off with a swim after their trek.
