Haicang Bridge, Suspension bridge in Xiamen, China.
Haicang Bridge is a suspension bridge in the coastal city of Xiamen, spanning the channel between Xiamen Island and the mainland. It carries six lanes of road traffic across three spans using a steel box girder structure.
Haicang Bridge was completed in 1999, during a period of rapid growth in Xiamen when the island's connections to the mainland were becoming a priority. It was the first bridge of its type in Asia, combining a floating construction system with a steel box girder over three spans.
Crossing the bridge means driving over open water with views of the port and coastline that shape this part of Fujian. For people living on Xiamen Island, it is one of the main links to the rest of the country.
The bridge is used mainly by car and forms part of the main road route between Xiamen Island and the mainland. Good views of the structure can be had from the shore areas on both sides, especially in the early morning or evening.
During construction, a floating system was used to position the steel box girders over deep water where standard scaffolding could not be used. This approach had never before been applied to a suspension bridge of this type anywhere in Asia.
