Beijing No. 4 High School, public beacon high school in Beijng, China
Beijing No. 4 High School is a secondary school in the Shichahai neighborhood of central Beijing. The campus combines older brick buildings with grey-tiled roofs and newer constructions, all set among mature trees and open courtyards.
The school was founded in 1907 under the name Shuntian Middle School with support from local authorities. Over the following decades it was renamed and reorganized several times before taking its current name.
The school's number in its name comes from the city's old system of ranking public secondary schools, a practice still reflected in how Beijingers talk about it today. Students can be seen moving between the older brick buildings and newer facilities during breaks, giving the campus a layered, lived-in feel.
The school is located in the Shichahai area, close to the lakes and hutong alleys of central Beijing, making it easy to combine a visit to the neighborhood with a walk past the campus. The grounds are active during school hours, so the exterior is best seen from the street.
The school counts among its former students several figures who went on to become prominent scientists, writers, and public officials, giving it a reputation that extends well beyond Beijing. This history means that admission is seen by many families across the city as a goal worth working toward for years.
