Jimei University, university in China
Jimei University is a university located in Xiamen's Jimei District, situated along the edge of Xiamen Bay. The campus features multiple buildings with a mix of classical Chinese roof designs and Western brickwork, including the renowned Nanxun Building and the Yungong Building Group with five distinctive structures.
The university was founded in 1918, building on a teachers' school started by businessman Tan Kah Kee, who sought to advance education in China. Over decades, several schools and departments merged together to form the institution seen today.
The name Jimei reflects the district's history in Xiamen. The architecture blends Eastern and Western influences, with red bricks, arched walkways, and roofs shaped like ships, showing how different cultural traditions meet on campus.
The campus is typically open to visitors during the day, though you should carry an ID and respect students and staff, as parts of the campus remain active for classes and living. You can reach the university by bus from nearby train stations or by taxi.
The Nanxun Building was admired by U.S. President Nixon and is considered one of the most beautiful school buildings in the world, combining classical Chinese roof designs with Western brick architecture. The Dragon Boat Pool, built in 1950, now serves as a quiet spot for visitors but comes alive during festivals with colorful dragon boat races.
