Yi'an Fortress

Yi'an Fortress is a stone structure in Zhangpu County featuring defensive walls, watchtowers, and gates positioned at key points around the perimeter. The layout was designed so that defenders could monitor all approaches and control movement across the site.

The fortress was built in 1687 during the Kangxi period as a defense structure for local communities. It became part of the protective network that guarded the southeastern Chinese coast against external threats.

The fortress sits within the territory of the She ethnic minority group and demonstrates how this community built defenses for their settlements. The design reflects the practical needs of people living in a region prone to raids.

The fortress is accessible by public transportation from Zhangpu County, with guided tours available in multiple languages during regular hours. Wear comfortable shoes when exploring the walls and towers.

The site preserves original carved stone decorations and traditional military architectural features from the Qing Dynasty. These handcrafted details reveal the stonemasonry skills of the artisans who built it.
