Putou Temple

Putou Temple is a Buddhist temple in Xiangcheng District of Zhangzhou, featuring traditional Chinese architecture with copper roofs and courtyards built from stone. The complex includes several halls connected by covered walkways, each serving different functions for worship and study.

The temple was substantially rebuilt during the Ming Dynasty, when major renovation work added new prayer halls and expanded the overall site. These architectural developments from that period remain visible in the layout and structure visitors see today.

Monks and pilgrims gather here daily to practice their faith, creating a living center of Buddhist worship in the community. Visitors can observe how the space serves as a place where people come to pray, reflect, and participate in religious rituals.

The main entrance is located on the eastern side of the grounds, where incense and offerings can be purchased before entering. The layout spreads across different levels, so wearing sturdy shoes is helpful when exploring the various halls and courtyards.

Certain meditation rooms within the complex are designed with acoustic properties that amplify the sound of chanting during prayer sessions. This careful engineering reflects how the builders considered the sensory experience of worship.
