Chengdu Zoo is a zoo in Chengdu, China, and the largest in southwest China, home to over 300 species spread across roughly 17 hectares (42 acres). The grounds are divided into more than 30 animal houses, each designed to resemble the natural habitat of its residents.
Chengdu Zoo opened in 1953 and moved to its current location in the Chenghua District in 1976 to give animals more space. Over the decades it built a strong reputation for panda breeding, having raised more than 58 giant pandas since its founding.
The zoo is in the Chenghua District and can be reached directly by metro line 3, which stops at the north entrance on South Zhaojuesi Road. Arriving early in the morning gives you the best chance to see the pandas when they are most active.
The monkey houses are fitted with swings and climbing ropes, so visitors watch the animals in constant motion rather than standing still. The zoo also has a Science Hall with a digital cinema that seats over 100 people and screens films about animals and nature every day.
