Arcadia Regional Unit

The region spans across three mountain ranges of Mainalo, Parnon, and Mount Lykaion, forming a network of plateaus and valleys between 500-1000 meters elevation.

During the Dorian invasion of Greece around 1100 BCE, the isolated position of Arcadia allowed its inhabitants to maintain their ancient dialect and cultural practices.

The traditional agricultural practices of Arcadia influenced Greek and Roman poetry, establishing a literary tradition that continued through European Renaissance literature.

The regional unit contains five municipalities including Tripoli, North Kynouria, South Kynouria, Gortynia, and Megalopoli, with Tripoli serving as the administrative center.

Underground channels drain the eastern plains of Arcadia, while the western plateau channels water through the Alpheus River system for hydroelectric power generation.
