Vöröskő Spring, Mountain spring at Bükk National Park, Hungary
Vöröskő Spring emerges from limestone in the Bükk Mountains through a concrete outlet structure at approximately 493 meters elevation. The spring is accessed via a walking trail that connects to a stop on the Felsőtárkány National Forest Railway.
The spring formed over centuries as rainfall seeped through the limestone plateau, creating an underground network of water channels. This natural system is responsible for the water flow that reaches the surface today.
The name Vöröskő means Red Stone in Hungarian, referring to the distinctive reddish hue of the limestone around this place. This coloring is visible in the surrounding rock formations and is one of the first things you notice when you arrive.
The best time to visit is after snow melts, when water pressure is strongest and the spring flows most actively. Wear sturdy hiking shoes and bring weather-appropriate clothing, as the trail crosses hilly terrain.
The water shoots out with such pressure during snowmelt that it sprays approximately 1.5 meters into the air from the outlet. This dramatic display happens for only three to four months each year, making each season distinctly different.
