Jhelum River, Major river system in Punjab Region, Pakistan.
The Jhelum flows from a spring in the Kashmir Valley and then crosses through mountain gorges before reaching the flat plains and joining a larger river system. Its banks shift between steep rock faces in the mountains and wide alluvial strips farther downstream.
Ancient chronicles name the river as a site of military crossings, including a battle in the 4th century BCE. Later rulers built bridges and canals to support trade and farming along its route.
The river appears in religious texts, and pilgrims visit several sacred sites along its course. Local fishermen work from flat boats and use methods passed down through generations.
A dam in the middle section alters the current and creates a large reservoir visible from boat trips. Visitors find viewpoints along the riverside roads, especially where the river passes through narrow valleys.
The river changes direction several times and forms large loops before turning south. At one point it cuts a deep gorge into high mountains and creates one of the most dramatic landscapes in the region.
