Indraprastha is a historic settlement in central Delhi that extends near the eastern bank of the Yamuna River, where Purana Qila fort now stands. The archaeological layers beneath the fort reveal traces of several building periods reaching back to pre-Christian centuries.
The oldest settlement traces date from the second millennium before Christ, when the area belonged to the Vedic cultural zone. Over the centuries, the site was rebuilt several times and changed its function until the present fort was built in the 16th century.
The North Indian epic remembers this site as a spiritual link to ancestors, which draws pilgrims and history seekers who come here to connect with past eras. The area still carries the mythological tales within it, kept alive in temples and local celebrations.

Beneath the fort grounds, archaeologists found pottery shards and coins from five successive epochs, showing how people lived here without interruption. Particularly noticeable are the black polished pottery wares that come from workshops in the Ganges plain and are rare in this region.
