Kartavya Path, Ceremonial boulevard in New Delhi, India
Kartavya Path is a three-kilometer ceremonial axis in New Delhi running from the presidential palace to India Gate. Wide pedestrian paths and open lawns line both sides of this straight boulevard through the government district.
British planners created the axis during colonial rule as the centerpiece of the new capital. A renaming in 2022 replaced the old colonial name with a term meaning national duty.
The broad avenue sees joggers and families walking along manicured lawns between major government buildings each day. In the evening, locals gather on the open squares to admire illuminated monuments and fountains.
The central location is reachable via Central Secretariat metro station, from which the wide avenue is easily walkable. Early morning hours offer cooler temperatures and fewer crowds for quiet strolls.
A large bronze statue of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose stands at the end beneath the canopy near India Gate. This sculpture took the place a few years ago where a British monarch memorial once stood.
