Nathpa Jhakri Dam, Gravity dam in Kinnaur district, India.
Nathpa Jhakri Dam is a gravity dam in the Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh, built across the Sutlej River. The concrete structure rises approximately 67 meters (220 feet) above the riverbed and captures water flowing down from the Himalayas.
Construction began in 1993 and continued through 2004, when the facility reached completion. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh inaugurated the plant the following year.
The dam serves multiple North Indian states including Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, and Uttarakhand, connecting different regional communities through power distribution.
The reservoir sits in mountainous terrain along the Sutlej, accessible via National Highway 5 that runs through Kinnaur valley. Visitors should be prepared for high altitude and may find some areas restricted.
A tunnel measuring roughly 27 kilometers (17 miles) carries water through the mountains to the turbine hall. This underground channel reaches a diameter of about 8.5 meters (28 feet).
