Saint Andrew's Lion

Saint Andrew's Lion is a stone sculpture with medieval carved details positioned near Sant'Andrea Church. The figure sits at a prominent spot where visitors naturally notice it upon approaching the sacred space.

The work dates to 1209, a time of increased religious construction throughout the region. It was created during a period when many sacred structures were newly built.

This stone figure marks the link between religious symbolism and medieval Italian building traditions. Such sculptures served to welcome visitors and signal the sacred nature of the nearby church.

Locally it is called La Gatta di Sant'Andrea even though it represents a lion rather than a cat. The sculpture has survived more than eight centuries in its original form, keeping the craftsmanship marks of when it was made.
