Bozrah, Biblical settlement in Tafilah Governorate, Jordan
Bozrah is an ancient settlement perched on a flat mountain top in Tafilah Governorate, connected to surrounding hills by a narrow causeway. Houses cluster across this elevated plateau, with natural cliffs forming protective barriers on multiple sides.
In ancient times, this place served as the capital of the kingdom of Edom and functioned as a regional center during the early monarchy period. Its position atop the mountain made it naturally defensible and strategically important.
The settlement maintains elements of ancient Edomite civilization while integrating with modern Jordanian society through its current village structure.
This settlement sits on an elevated plateau reached through a narrow passage with walking paths across the site. Wear sturdy shoes as the terrain is uneven and the edges drop steeply in many places.
The site required minimal defensive walls since the surrounding steep cliffs already formed a natural fortress. This geological advantage allowed inhabitants to protect the settlement with very little construction effort.
