Kansai Science City, Research district in Soraku County, Japan
Kansai Science City, also known as Keihanna, is a planned research hub spreading across parts of Kyoto, Osaka, and Nara Prefectures. It brings together universities, research institutes, and laboratories in one area designed to foster collaboration between academic and industrial organizations.
The Keihanna project began in the 1980s as part of a broader effort to modernize the Kansai region. It officially opened in 1994 and has since grown into one of Japan's major scientific and research hubs.
The name Keihanna combines characters from Kyoto, Osaka, and Nara, reflecting the geographical connection between these three major Japanese cultural centers.
The area connects to nearby cities through several train lines including the Gakkentoshi, Nara, and Kyoto Line. Getting around by car or bus is also possible, and some facilities link together through walking paths.
Research facilities within the district focus on information technology, biotechnology, and environmental science, creating partnerships between academic institutions and industries.
