Eldoret, Commercial hub in Uasin Gishu County, Kenya
Eldoret is a town on the Uasin Gishu Plateau at 2,095 meters altitude in Kenya, grouping around the Sosiani River and several industrial installations. Wide paved roads extend from the central business district to residential areas with mixed story buildings and commercial warehouses.
The settlement began in 1905 as a destination for land allocation to settlers reachable via the Uganda Railway connection. From 1924 onwards the railway line enabled direct freight transport, and the installations grew through storage and processing of grain from the surrounding area.
In the town center sits Eldoret Market with unbroken rows of vendors trading between regional plant produce and household goods. On the roads farther out sit private running tracks and training camps where athletes begin interval training from early till late.
The altitude creates cooler temperatures with morning fog that stays until mid-morning. Many facilities sit along Uganda Road running west and the intersections in the town center shared by pedestrians and vehicles at the same time.
Grain farms around the town use the volcanic soils of the plateau, leading to the concentration of grain mills in the outer area. Flour dust regularly covers the roadside edges and storage buildings near the processing facilities, especially during harvest season in October through November.
