Shchyolkovo, Industrial city in Moscow Oblast, Russia
Shchyolkovo stretches along the Klyazma River about 20 kilometers (12 miles) northeast of Moscow, taking in textile factories and chemical plants across different districts. Soviet-era apartment blocks stand beside newer buildings, while green spaces along the riverbank offer room for walking.
The settlement began in 1501 as a small village and grew into a silk weaving center during the 18th century. In 1925, the place gained city status and developed into an industrial site within Moscow Oblast.
The Holy Trinity Cathedral draws residents to Orthodox services and feast days, while its golden domes rise above the residential neighborhoods. Along the Klyazma, anglers and walkers gather on summer days, when the river becomes part of everyday city life.
Trains from Moscow's Yaroslavsky station run regularly and reach the city in about an hour. On weekdays, connections run more often than on weekends, when the schedule thins out.
Silk weaving and textile factories shaped the cityscape for centuries, and old industrial buildings still recall that tradition today. Some former workshop halls stand empty, while other facilities continue to produce fabrics.
