Ta'if, Summer resort city in western Saudi Arabia
Ta'if is a highland city on a plateau southeast of Mecca in western Saudi Arabia, located in Ta'if Governorate at an altitude of 1,879 meters. The city spreads across several districts with residential areas, parks and agricultural zones that benefit from the cooler temperatures of the elevation.
The settlement began in 501 as a trading post and housed a pre-Islamic temple. During the early Islamic period the place gained importance as a refuge for people from the hot plains.
The annual Souk Okaz market continues the tradition of pre-Islamic trade gatherings and today presents artisans, poets and merchants from across Saudi Arabia. Visitors there experience a mix of old market traditions and contemporary Saudi culture.
The international airport offers connections to major Saudi cities, while highways allow travel from Mecca and Jeddah. Summer provides the most comfortable conditions because of the milder temperatures at altitude.
The surrounding rose farms supply petals for the local perfume industry and produce rose water using traditional methods. During the spring harvest season the scent of Damask roses fills entire neighborhoods.
