Severan Bridge

The Severan Bridge spans 120 meters across the Cendere River with a stone arch reaching 34 meters in height near the ancient city of Arsameia.

The Legio XVI Gallica constructed this bridge during the late 2nd century AD to replace an earlier structure from Emperor Vespasian's time.

Four Corinthian columns were placed on the bridge to honor Emperor Septimius Severus, his wife Julia Domna, and their sons, with Geta's column later removed.

The bridge underwent restoration in 1997 and remains closed to vehicles, with a modern bridge constructed 500 meters east handling current traffic needs.

The structure retains the second-largest surviving Roman arch span, measuring 34.2 meters across the narrowest point of Cendere Creek.
