Acıpayam, Administrative district in Denizli Province, Turkey
Acıpayam is an administrative district in Denizli Province that occupies elevated terrain positioned between the Aegean and Mediterranean regions. Two reservoirs in the area support melon and watermelon farming, while modern textile manufacturing also operates throughout the district.
The region has been continuously settled since around 2000 BCE, with Hittites, Ancient Greeks, Byzantines, and Turkish peoples each leaving their mark. This succession of different cultures shaped how the area developed over time.
The district's name comes from Persian and means bitter almond in the local dialect, showing the historical language influences that shaped the region. People here have kept a strong connection to farming traditions that remain central to daily life.
The best time to visit is during the harvest and planting season when the district's agricultural activity is most visible. Good road connections throughout the area make it easy to explore different parts of the district and move between them.
Keloğlan Cave is a natural cavern that extends for several hundred meters and gives visitors a chance to see underground rock formations up close. The cave reveals how the geological history of the region is preserved within its stone and mineral formations.
