Phan Rang Air Base, airport in Vietnam
Phan Rang Air Base is a large military airfield in Tuyên Quang, Vietnam. The facility features an extended concrete runway with taxiways on flat terrain, surrounded by aircraft parking areas, fuel storage, and various operational buildings.
The base was built in 1942 by the Japanese military and later used by the French air force before being abandoned in 1954. The United States rebuilt the airfield in the mid-1960s with an extended runway and made it a major hub for air operations during the Vietnam War until it fell to North Vietnamese forces in April 1975.
The site sits on flat open terrain with minimal vegetation and is largely visible from the perimeter. Daytime visits work best for exploring the scattered old structures and aircraft remains, as uneven ground and abandoned sections require careful footing.
In 1966 Vietnamese rocket forces attacked the base, and in 1970 enemy infantry launched a raid, both repelled by base defenses. These strikes demonstrate how contested and strategically vital this location was during the war.
