Tanguar haor, Ramsar wetland in Sunamganj District, Bangladesh.
Tanguar haor is a wetland in Sunamganj spanning two administrative regions and containing about 120 interconnected water bodies of varying sizes. The landscape features seasonal waterways and open water areas surrounded by low vegetation and agricultural land.
The site gained protection status as an Ecologically Critical Area in 1999, followed by recognition as a Ramsar wetland in 2000. This international designation aimed to safeguard its ecological resources and water systems.
Local fishing communities rely on traditional methods passed down through generations, working in harmony with seasonal water cycles. Their daily routines reflect a deep knowledge of how the wetland changes throughout the year.
The wetland is most accessible between November and February when water levels are lower and navigation is easier. Local boat operators can arrange tours, and early morning or late afternoon visits offer the best viewing conditions.
The wetland serves as a major stopover for about 200 migratory bird species during the cooler months as they travel from northern regions. This seasonal gathering transforms the area into a significant resting and feeding ground for these traveling birds.
