Monts d'Ardèche, Regional natural park and geopark in Ardèche, France
Monts d'Ardèche is a regional park and geopark spread across the Ardèche region, featuring more than fifty geological sites with diverse rock types and formations. The landscape includes canyons, plateaus, and river valleys that reveal different periods of geological development.
The geopark was established in 2001 to protect and study the region's geological features and rock formations. The layers of stone found here tell a story spanning over five hundred million years of Earth's development.
Local people have built their villages and farmhouses using stones from the surrounding area for centuries, creating a landscape where geology and human settlement are deeply intertwined. This practical relationship with the land remains visible in the traditional construction methods still used today.
Information centers located throughout the park provide maps and guidance about geological sites and walking routes to explore them. Sturdy footwear is recommended because many trails cross varied terrain and rocky ground.
The area contains eight distinct geological systems, each telling a different story and reflecting conditions from various times in Earth's history. This variety makes it a rare place where visitors can observe so many rock types in one region.
