Pambar River, Mountain river in Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary, Kerala, India.
The Pambar River is a river in Kerala, India, flowing through the forests and hills of Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary. It winds through hilly terrain before joining the Chinnar River at Koottar, forming a natural corridor for wildlife along its course.
The river has its source in the Anamudi hills of the Western Ghats and became part of the protected area now known as Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary. It has long served as a water source for both the forest and the communities living on its edges.
Local tribal communities grow maize and other traditional crops along the riverbanks, a practice that remains visible in the landscape today. This connection to the water shapes daily life in this remote part of Kerala.
The river is accessible along the Munnar-Udumalpet road, which passes through the sanctuary and provides several stopping points near the water. Sturdy footwear is a good idea, as the ground around the banks can be wet and uneven.
Unlike most rivers in Kerala, the Pambar flows eastward and feeds a reservoir across the state border in Tamil Nadu. This makes it one of the few Kerala rivers that drains toward the eastern side of the Western Ghats.
