Zhan Garden, Botanical garden in Nanjing, China.
Zhan Garden is a botanical garden in Nanjing with traditional structures, ponds, and connected pathways leading to different plant collections and exhibition areas. The site also contains the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom History Museum within its grounds.
The site originated during the Ming Dynasty when General Xu Da established it, but suffered destruction during the Taiping Rebellion in the Qing period. It was later reconstructed to restore its layout and function.
The garden arranges rocks, water, and native plants following Chinese landscape principles that create harmony between natural and human-made elements. Visitors can see how these traditional methods shape the way people move through and experience the space.
The garden is located on Zhan Yuan Road and maintains regular visiting hours throughout the year. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended since exploring the different plant areas and pathways requires significant time on foot.
The site contains Mingzhi Hall, a memorial space originally dedicated to a provincial governor from the late Qing era. This structure preserves a lesser-known chapter of local history that many visitors pass by without noticing.
